LPU designed & developed Formula Car IR-12 for more success in the International Championship

Teamed up as 'Illuminati Racers', engineering students group of Lovely Professional University (Punjab) have designed & developed 'Formula 1 Racing Car IR-12'. This is the 2nd in the chain of innovative cars designed and developed by the LPU students besides India's first
mobile operated Driverless Car. After passing rigorous inspection by Society for Automotive Engineering (SAE) technical team and Maruti Suzuki officials, this unique racing car entered a National Competition - for the title Supra SAE Inida 2012 Formula 1 Type Race Car.

Held at Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida, this national level Formula 1 Racing championship saw 148 Institutions from across the country participate. Only 65 were selected to manufacture F1 Car within a budget of INR 1,000,000 each and LPU's IR-12 was listed among top 30 racing cars of the country.

"After basking in the success of national IR-12, our team of 22 students is now geared up to develop International level racing car IR-13 to participate in Nebraska Lincoln championship (USA). Our team has already been selected by the F1 championship which is scheduled to be held this year in June. As cars used in F1 championships are quite different from usual cars, we are working towards adding a diagnostic system to it so that faults, if any, may automatically get detected on screen. We have ensured that the driver saves time and can concentrate on other aspects of car control by setting up the pedal shift on steering itself. In addition, we have adopted the kinetic energy reservation system (KERS) that will store energy and convert it into power which will in turn boost acceleration. Our effort is to live up to our mentor’s expectations and prove our mettle in the final competition in USA," said Rahul Jagwani & Awanish Partap Singh, final year students of M.Tech (Mech. Engg.), LPU.

"The FSAE Nebraska Lincoln Championship is considered to be one of the biggest global F1 racing events and our students being selected to participate in such an event gives me a great sense of happiness and immense pride. Our aim is to give students the right direction and a suitable platform so that their inventive skill and astuteness is utilised in the appropriate way. The development of a national racing car IR-12 is a reflection of the huge talent that exists in them. I am confident that the unwavering hard work and dedication shown by our students will usher in many more triumphs and accolades in the near future," said Ashok Mittal, Chancellor, LPU.
