Angelique Kerber will travel to the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, which begins in Stuttgart’s Porsche Arena on April 21, with her second WTA title in the bag. The Porsche Team Germany player won the indoor tournament in Copenhagen after beating local
hero Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-4 in the final. It was her first ever win against the former world No. 1 who is one of numerous Top 10 players in the field for the 35th edition of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
“The win gives me lots of added confidence and was just the right fine-tuning for Stuttgart,” said the 24-year-old German who this year has already won the indoor tournament in Paris and was a semifinalist in Indian Wells. The win has moved her up to No. 14 in the WTA rankings.
The first set against her good friend was evenly balanced up to 4-all. Then Angelique Kerber broke serve before wrapping up the set on her own delivery. She broke Caroline Wozniacki once more in the first game of the second set but was unable to stop the No. 1 seed and title-holder from racing into a 4-1 lead. Fighting back strongly, she levelled the scores at 4-4 before breaking again. She then clinched her second WTA title on her first match point. After beating Maria Sharapova and Marion Bartoli in Paris and Li Na in Indian Wells, the win against Caroline Wozniacki was her fourth against a Top 10 player this season.
Angelique Kerber’s toughest task en route to the final came in the quarterfinals where she needed one hour and 52 minutes before eventually overcoming the up-and-coming German Mona Barthel 6-2, 0-6, 7-5. It gave her revenge for her loss early this year in the semifinals of the tournament in Hobart, Australia. The semifinal against Jelena Jankovic however posed no great problems - after putting on a fantastic display, she ran out a 6-2, 6-1 winner against the former world No. 1 from Serbia.
